Top 10 Reasons I Don’t Like Couponing…YES, I Just Said That!!!

Okay, first of all before you go CRAZY let me explain!  I LOVE to coupon!  Couponing is my second job (besides blogging) and I do consider it a job because it’s keeping money in my pocket!  But with everything that we LOVE, there are also things that we don’t like about them.

Here are the TOP 10 things I don’t like about couponing:  (I’m sure MOST “get” this)

1.  Shelf Clearers:  These are people who buy the best deals…and they buy ALL that the store has, leaving nothing on the shelf for other shoppers.  I understand the importance of stockpiling, but there is a way to get as many as you want and still leave plenty on the shelf for others.  The best thing to do if you’re wanting to buy multiples of a certain product, is to call the store ahead of time and place an order for the amount you want.  Stores are GLAD to do that because then they don’t have to write as many rain check or pacify other shoppers who are complaining that there are NO more items on the shelf.

2.  Cutting coupons in the summer:  My summers are filled with days outside and I rarely have time to cut and organize all of my coupons in the summer months.  So, I tend to use the whole insert organizing method during the summer.

3.  Letting my coupons expire (accidentally):  This does happen, even to the PRO couponers!  I don’t know how many times that I’ve went to use a coupon and it’s expired…usually the day before!

4.  Cranky Cashiers:  I know alot of people have bad days, we all do.  But I’ve been to stores where I’ve had the same cashier over and over and they’re ALWAYS cranky.  These are the cashiers that tend to give me a hard time with coupons.  I always try to “kill them with kindness” because that works better than being cranky back at them.

5.  Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Coupons:  Simply, they are NEVER high valued enough to satisfy me!  I can’t understand how I’m supposed to pair a $0.25 coupon with something that costs upwards of $6.99 – $10 and feel good about it!  So…I buy my toilet paper in Bulk on Amazon or pair store coupons with manuf. coupons along with rewards deals at the drugstores.  I also will use my ECB’s or RR’s from CVS and Walgreens to pay for those things…ugh!

6.  Chocolate coupons:  Any coupon for chocolate and I have that  ”love-hate” relationship.  I love them but ohhh, they get me into trouble!!  ;)

7.  Being behind someone who’s paying full price:  Ohhh, that just kills me.  I don’t know how many times I’ve been standing behind someone in line who’s buying something that I know that they could get for FREE or at least 50% off with a coupon!!  I’m not one to be pushy, but there have been times when I’ve given someone a coupon and said, “You can get that FREE with this coupon”.  I’ve also been knows to give someone my business card ;) !

8:  Buying Sunday Papers with NO coupon inserts inside:  YES…I’ve done this a handful of times!  Bought my papers to get home and find that someone’s nabbed the inserts out of it!  NOW, I check to make sure that the inserts are inside before I leave the store!

9.  Regional Coupons:  I know that you’ve noticed many times over that I may mention a certain coupon value on the site.  When you go to get that coupon, it’s for a different value OR you just don’t even have that coupon at all.  One good thing about regional coupons is that if you DON’T get that particular coupon, you can always order multiples of it on eBay or a Coupon Clipping Service.

10.  Okay…so this 10th one isn’t a reason.  The title just sounded better than if I had said, The Top 9 Reasons I Don’t Like Couponing.  So, what I want to say is that there are alot of things that can be bothersome as a couponer but the PROS totally outweigh the CONS!  I save my family alot of money from one week to the next on groceries, household good, personal supplies, and the like.

At the end of the day, coupons save my family’s budget by thousands of dollars each year!  So, I’m willing to put up with shelf clearers, cutting coupons in the summer, letting {some} coupons expire, cranky cashiers, the lack of good paper goods coupons, chocolate coupons {YUM}, giving people coupons and business cards, paying for Sunday Papers with NO inserts, and those regional coupons!!

I’d LOVE to hear your comments on these subjects….let me know what you dislike about couponing!  This should be fun!

LOL! I love number 7! It is so hard for me to watch someone buy something at full price i am getting way cheaper. Or even watch them pick out the brand next to the one they could get FREE! That is the main reason I started blogging. :)

I have given coupons out along with my business card too. Hehehe!

I have a REALLY bad habit of looking at the person’s cart in front of me in line, and then giving them coupons for the stuff that they have!!! They love the savings, but I kind of feel like the supermarket peeping Tom!!!! And one thing that really irks me, is whenever I get a person behind me, and they see all of my coupons, and they’re rude about it…. I’ve actually had people say stuff like “Great, we had to get behind one of THOSE people…. now this is gonna take forever”… or, all of the sighs I have to listen to…. I DO have a tip, though…. when I have coupons for a free item, I always write in the price of the item so that the cashier doesn’t have to look on the register tape to find it…. cashiers really appreciate that, and it makes the process a lot quicker!!!

I think that’s the worst part, even more so than the cranky cashiers!

These situations are fun sometimes, especially when I’m having an anxious day or anxious about my shopping trip.

I find that I smile harder and am more polite just to avoid the hassle. I am not sure why, but those victories (I hate to call it that) are the best. It’s especially entertaining to hear one of those ‘oh great, coupons’ mutterers and then convert them to your side as they see your savings at the end.

I have to agree with every single one of these. I think my number one is cranky cashiers although shelf clearers rank right up there.

Thanks for the humor in couponing!! It really is NOT an easy job to do! Esp. when you’re busy with everything else! :)
